Event Preview
Two American stars will collide on the clay at Roland Garros in the second round of the French Open on Thursday. Anna Li will be the huge outsider in the betting, but it is worth considering the rapid approach in which the 24-year-old is improving. She was in excellent form in the opening round, dropping just four games in a straight sets win over Maria Lourdes Carle.
Li won 61% of the points on the first serve in that clash, and she converted on five of seven break point opportunities. She has already shown that she competes well on the clay surface, having reached the finals in both the Internacional de Valencia and Bastad Open in 2024.

Jessica Pegula is the more experienced of the two American players on Thursday. The 31-year-old was professional in the opening round at Roland Garros, sweeping past Anca Todoni in straight sets on Tuesday. However, she will need to sharpen up her game this week after hitting three double faults and making a number of unforced errors.
Pegula has been consistent in Grand Slam events since the start of 2021, reaching at least the quarterfinal stage on seven occasions. That includes a run to the last eight at the French Open in 2022. But, her win rate of 62% is her lowest of any of the majors.
Head-to-Head Record
Interestingly, Li holds the advantage in the head-to-head meetings between the stars. She was a winner in the only previous clash between the Americans in August 2018. But, it is worth noting that the game took place on a hard court.
Anna Li vs. Jessica Pegula Picks
Pegula was professional in the opening round, but she will need to step it up against the talented Li on Thursday. It could be worth taking a chance on the improving outsider this week, as she already has plenty of likable performances in the book on the clay.
