Fight Preview

Ian Machado Garry (12-0) was meant to fight Geoff Neal at UFC 292, but โ€œHandz of Steelโ€ withdrew due to health reasons less than two weeks before the event. To save the day, Neil Magny (28-10) stepped in as his replacement, even though he fought a three-round bout with Philip Rowe nine weeks ago.

Magny won that fight by a decision (split), which was the 17th time in his career that he defeated someone by points. He also has seven wins by a KO/TKO, although the last time he finished an opponent this way was in 2018. When it comes to submission, Magny has four wins by this method, the most recent of which happened last November when he beat Daniel Rodriguez by Dโ€™Arce choke, for which he won the Performance of the Night bonus.

But Rodriguez is nowhere near as good at wrestling/grappling as Magnyโ€™s next opponent. Ian Garry has a background in judo, which explains why his takedown defense is 63%. Heโ€™s also very good on the floor, the evidence being that every time he got taken down, he was able to defend himself.

โ€œThe Futureโ€ is using his wrestling/grappling skills primarily for defense and itโ€™s striking thatโ€™s his most dangerous offensive weapon. The Irishman lands 6.85 significant strikes per minute, which is the third-best average among active welterweights in the UFC.

Ian Garry vs. Neil Magny Prediction

Not only is Ian Garry a better fighter than Neil Magny but heโ€™s spent way more time preparing for UFC 292. We expect him to get in the Octagon on Saturday and finish his opponent. Two-thirds of his fights ended before the final bell, and we think the same will be the case with the August 19 fight.
