Event Preview
The world-famous Epsom Derby is set for this Saturday, with a talented field of 19 all aiming to the legendary roll of honor that dates back to 1780. It is one of the world’s most important races, and an indicator of its legacy is the fact that a number of races have borrowed its title- including the Kentucky Derby.
A stamina-sapping mile and four furlongs will be covered this weekend, presenting a unique challenge to the horses aged three. Ruling Court arguably has the best form in the book after winning the first Classic of the British season- the G1 2000 Guineas last month. However, there are clear questions to answer regarding whether he will stay the distance.

Aidan O’Brien has won the race a record ten times, and he holds a number of interesting contenders this weekend. Among those include market leader Delacroix, who has won two-from-two this year. O’Brien has won each of the two editions of the race with City Of Troy and Auguste Rodin, with both blowing out on their seasonal returns before dominating at Epsom. Therefore, hope may not be lost with The Lion In Winter, who faded quickly to finish sixth in the G1 Dante last month.
Pride Of Arras was an excellent winner of that notable prep race, and the Ralph Beckett-trained colt still has scope for progress. The three-year-old has the pedigree to suggest that this trip will suit, but his inexperience is a slight negative, as the Derby will only be his third career start.
Instead, stablemate Stanhope Gardens could be a contender worth considering. He is closely matched on juvenile form with Delacroix after finishing a nose second in the G3 Autumn Stakes, and he will be tuned up nicely for this run after winning with minimal fuss at Salisbury at the end of May on his return to action.
Epsom Derby Picks
The Dante has so often proved to be an informative race when finding the winner of the Derby. Therefore, Damysus could be a challenger that is peaking at the right time for the team of John & Thady Gosden.
The three-year-old was just a length behind Pride Of Array last month, and he should be suited by this step up in distance after doing all his best work late at York. Still progressive, and the booking of James Doyle is a massive bonus.
